Raakaasa Hits Theaters with Mixed Reviews as Sangeeth Shobhan Steps into Fantasy Territory

Telugu cinema's rising comedy star Sangeeth Shobhan returns to theaters today with Raakaasa, a fantasy horror comedy that marks another ambitious project from producer Niharika Konidela's Pink Elephant Pictures. The film, directed by debut filmmaker Manasa Sharma, opened to mixed reactions from critics who praised the lead performances while pointing out familiar storytelling patterns.

Coming off his breakthrough success with MAD (2023), which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, Shobhan takes on the role of Veera Babu, an NRI who returns to his village after ten years only to find his childhood lover married to someone else. What starts as a typical romantic disappointment quickly escalates into supernatural territory when the protagonist becomes entangled in an ancient village tradition involving human sacrifice to an evil force residing in a thousand-year-old palace.

Producer Niharika Konidela, who has been building her reputation as a discerning content creator, describes Raakaasa as a "fantasy comedy" rather than horror-comedy, emphasizing mythical elements and adventure over traditional scares. The film reunites her with several collaborators from her web series projects, including director Manasa Sharma and lead actor Sangeeth Shobhan.

Reviews suggest that while Shobhan delivers his trademark comic timing and dialogue delivery effectively, the film suffers from a predictable narrative structure. Critics particularly highlighted the chemistry between Shobhan and comedian Getup Srinu as one of the film's strongest assets, with their scenes providing consistent laughs throughout both halves. However, female lead Nayan Sarika reportedly gets limited scope to showcase her acting abilities in what's described as a typical love interest role.

The release comes as Niharika Konidela continues building her production house's reputation following the success of Committee Kurrollu. Speaking about her lead actor, Konidela praised Shobhan as "a director's actor" who constantly works with filmmakers to explore different expressions and performance styles. The film also features an ensemble supporting cast including Vennela Kishore, Brahmaji, Tanikella Bharani, and Ashish Vidyarthi.

While Raakaasa may not break new ground in the fantasy comedy genre, it represents another step forward for both Shobhan's evolving career and Pink Elephant Pictures' journey from web content to theatrical releases. The film's success will likely determine whether this collaboration between the rising actor and producer will continue their partnership in future projects.
