Rakasa Takes Weekend Lead Over Sharwa's Biker in Surprising Box Office Face-off
Niharika Konidela's sophomore production edges past sports drama with ₹11.5 crore worldwide gross.

In what many would call an upset, Niharika Konidela's comedy horror Rakasa has emerged victorious in its opening weekend battle against Sharwanand's Biker, collecting ₹11.5 crore worldwide gross against the latter's ₹10 crore combined Telugu-Tamil total.
This wasn't supposed to be a fair fight. Biker, which was postponed twice specifically to avoid competition, didn't anticipate that Rakasa would pose such a serious challenge. The sports drama entered the fray with expectations of reaching a ₹40 crore gross target, while Rakasa's makers set a more modest ₹20 crore benchmark.
The numbers tell an interesting story about changing audience preferences. Rakasa, starring Sangeeth Shobhan and Nayan Sarika, found particular favor among urban youth despite what trade circles describe as a weak storyline. Its light humor and comedy horror elements seem to have struck a chord, especially in multiplex-driven markets across Telugu states and North America, where it collected ₹2.25 crore compared to Biker's ₹1.55 crore overseas.
For Niharika, this represents a crucial follow-up to her blockbuster debut as producer with Committee Kurrollu, which became a phenomenon last year with its ₹24.5 crore final tally against a ₹9 crore budget. That film's success established Pink Elephant Pictures as a serious player, and Rakasa's opening weekend performance suggests the momentum continues.
Sharwanand's predicament is more concerning. Despite receiving relatively better critical reviews, Biker is struggling to convert appreciation into footfalls. The actor has been actively visiting theaters and meeting audiences, but the lukewarm response puts enormous pressure on weekday collections.
Both films now face their real test as the crucial weekdays begin, with IPL matches threatening to further dent collections. Rakasa needs approximately ₹8-9 crore more to achieve safety, while Biker requires a steep ₹28-29 crore to reach breakeven. With Dacoits also arriving soon, the window for recovery is rapidly closing.
What makes this contest fascinating isn't just the numbers: it's what they represent. A comedy horror with newcomers and modest ambitions outpacing an established star's sports drama signals that content and audience connect matter more than conventional star power in today's market.
