KCR's 2009 TDP Alliance Was Master Political Move, Not Opportunism: BRS Chief's Defense
Former Telangana CM explains controversial tie-up with Naidu was strategic ploy to force TDP support for statehood.

K Chandrasekhar Rao's decision to align with Telugu Desam Party in 2009 remains one of the most debated political moves in combined Andhra Pradesh history. On Monday, the BRS supremo offered his most detailed defense yet of what critics have long dismissed as rank opportunism.
Speaking at a party gathering marking 25 years of TRS-BRS journey, KCR insisted the alliance was a calculated gambit to extract Telangana support from then-TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. "Naidu was against Telangana formation. But I wanted to make him say Jai Telangana and that is the only reason why I entered into an alliance with the TDP," KCR explained.
The political backdrop of 2009 painted a dire picture for the then-Telangana Rashtra Samithi. YS Rajasekhara Reddy's Congress government was firmly opposed to bifurcation, and TRS was hemorrhaging influence in its own backyard. Even party leaders like Harish Rao were reportedly maintaining back-channel communications with YSR's camp.
Faced with the prospect of another Congress term under YSR, which would have effectively killed the statehood dream, KCR made the controversial call to partner with anyone who could prevent that outcome. The alliance included not just TDP but even CPI, despite the Left party's opposition to bifurcation.
KCR's revelation about Sonia Gandhi's alleged pressure tactics adds another layer to the statehood saga. He claimed the Congress president asked him "16 occasions" to compromise on Hyderabad's status to expedite Telangana's creation: a concession he firmly rejected.
While KCR frames 2009 as strategic brilliance, the episode highlighted the complex chess game of Andhra politics. His subsequent participation in NDA rallies in Punjab showed just how far he was willing to travel, literally and figuratively, to keep the Telangana cause alive.
Today, with both leaders now governing their respective states, that unlikely 2009 partnership reads like ancient history. But KCR's defense suggests he still views those politically tumultuous years through the lens of a freedom fighter who had to make unsavory alliances for a greater cause.
