The Rayalaseema district of Kadapa has once again found itself at the center of communal tensions, this time over something as seemingly mundane as naming a traffic junction. What should have been a simple administrative decision has spiraled into violent clashes that required police intervention and the imposition of prohibitory orders across sensitive areas.

The flashpoint is the Almaspet junction, where two groups have locked horns over nomenclature. One faction is demanding the circle be named after the 18th-century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan, while another group insists on naming it after Lord Hanuman. This ideological divide turned physical on Saturday when both sides gathered at the contested location.

The situation deteriorated rapidly with stone pelting reported from both sides. Police were forced to resort to lathi charges and tear gas to restore order, but not before Circle Inspector Narasimha Raju and two others sustained injuries in the melee. The visual of a senior police officer getting hurt while trying to maintain peace underscores just how volatile the situation became.

What makes this dispute particularly concerning is its recurring nature. According to police sources, similar tensions have been simmering for over a decade, surfacing intermittently whenever the naming issue gains momentum. This suggests deeper underlying communal fault lines that opportunistic elements seem eager to exploit.

District Collector Sridhar Cherukuri and SP Shelke Nachiket Vishwanath have rightly termed the violence as unfortunate, pointing fingers at anti-social elements attempting to disturb communal harmony. Their warning about false information spreading on social media is particularly relevant in today's digital age where rumors can inflame tensions faster than ever before.

The political response has been measured but firm. The CPI(M) state unit, through Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao, has called for strict action against instigators while appealing for calm. Meanwhile, Telugu Desam Party leaders are reportedly engaging with both groups to broker peace: a pragmatic approach that recognizes the need for dialogue over confrontation.

As Kadapa remains under heavy police deployment with prohibitory orders in place, this incident serves as a stark reminder of how historical and religious symbolism can become weapons in the wrong hands. The challenge for authorities now is not just maintaining immediate peace, but addressing the root causes that allow such disputes to fester and explode periodically.
