Jailer 2 Telugu Rights Create Distribution Dilemma for Buyers

The magic of Rajinikanth at the box office was undeniable three years ago when Nelson Dilipkumar's Jailer became a sensational blockbuster, particularly creating wonders in Telugu states. Now, the same crazy combination is returning with a sequel, but the business calculations are causing serious headaches in trade circles.

For Jailer 2's Telugu states rights, makers are reportedly demanding around ₹60 crores: a figure that has distributors taking a step back. On paper, this seems reasonable considering the first film collected just ₹12 crores as business but generated over ₹50 crores share in Telugu. However, the reality check comes from what followed Jailer.

Rajinikanth's subsequent releases, Lal Salaam, Vettaiyan, and Coolie, have left Telugu buyers nursing losses. This track record is making everyone cautious about investing such a massive amount purely on Superstar's star power. The industry has learned that Rajinikanth's Telugu market success is heavily content-dependent.

The situation became more complex with strong rumors about Nandamuri Balakrishna playing a key role in Jailer 2. Had Balayya been confirmed, collecting ₹60 crores in Telugu wouldn't have been too difficult. But reports suggest the Nandamuri hero has declined the project, bringing business deals back to square one.

Distributors are now playing the waiting game, preferring to see how the film's buzz builds rather than committing blindly to such hefty rates. If the rights don't sell at the expected price, Sun Pictures might resort to their familiar strategy of releasing through established distributors like Dil Raju or Suresh Babu on a commission basis.

What made the original Jailer a triple blockbuster was its pulsating music and elevation sequences. Unless the sequel matches that intensity, achieving a ₹60 crore break-even won't be easy. With an August release planned, the makers need to generate significant buzz to justify their asking price in a market that's become increasingly selective about Rajinikanth films post-Jailer.
